Workshop description

Reading is central to university study. From the books on your reading list to new journal articles in your field, you will almost certainly find yourself reading more than you have ever done before. The type of materials you will be expected to engage with will also be varied and at times challenging to read. This workshop will look at techniques for when to read, strategies for selecting what to read, and exploring how to read.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the most effective times to read to get the most from your time
  • Develop techniques to be able to read selectively, enabling you to choose appropriate materials to meet different needs
  • Start applying active reading techniques alongside the skills to be able to effectively analyse and summarise a piece of text

Who this workshop is for

All students need the ability to prioritise and synthesise large amounts of reading materials taken from lectures, reading lists and wider research. This workshop is specifically aimed at new undergraduate students who wish to develop the skills of effectively managing their reading. New postgraduate students might also find this session beneficial.

Facilitator

This workshop is run by an Academic & Library Specialist from the Brynmor Jones Library Skills Team.
