Event description

Event description

Speaker: Dr Mari Greenfield, Academic Researcher in Maternity Care, Doula and Birth Activist.

Abstract:

Up to 30% of women in the UK experience childbirth as a traumatic event, with many consequently going on to experience some form of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder following childbirth. There is currently no universal screening for traumatic birth in the UK, and few dedicated services available to support those who have experienced a traumatic birth. When these women become pregnant again, they may experience mistrust in the healthcare professionals providing maternity care to them. This talk will explore the factors which build or reduce women’s trust after a previous traumatic birth, and provide an opportunity to discuss ways in which rebuilding trust can be facilitated.

About Dr Greenfield:

Dr Greenfield has worked as a doula for over a decade, and as a mentor for new doulas with Doula UK. In this role she has worked with many different clients and families, including women in prison, asylum seeking women, lesbian couples, surrogate families and pregnant transmen. She has supported people making a range of choices in pregnancy and birth, ranging from elective caesarean births to freebirths.

Mari is also an honorary Research Associate at the University of Hull. Her research interests come from her work as a doula, and centre around the individual experiences of maternity care. She has particular interests in exploring different people’s experiences of making choices, traumatic births, and in perinatal mental health.

About the OpenCampus Programme

The OpenCampus Programme is the University of Hull's open access adult lifelong learning education programme.  You can attend one session or all the sessions in a series.  Sessions are informal and friendly and are not traditional public lectures.  We do not charge for admission to sessions so we utilise the University's normal teaching spaces when they are not required for student teaching (lecture theatres and seminar rooms).  We try to provide access to one of the University Cafes as part of the experience, but cannot guarantee this. We try to time sessions to meet the needs of the majority of our learners. We like to accommodate the needs of all attendees (seen and unseen needs) by having a comfort break at each session.   We may offer specialist one off sessions for which we may make a charge.

We may also share other events at the University that may be of interest to our typical OpenCampus learners.
