Event description
This session will introduce the concept of inclusive practice with teaching and learning and show how small changes in practice can improve student learning, for example how to use MS Word Headings and Styles which generate a Table of Contents and simplify navigation.
The session will look at external inclusivity drivers, as well as those within the University of Hull, and how widening participation in higher education has resulted in ever more diverse student cohorts with a broad range of learning needs and preferences. Also, as more teaching and learning becomes blended and makes increasing use of virtual environments, so the risk of inadvertently creating barriers to accessing digital resources is increased.
Putting these drivers together, Sue and Lee offer a session which will explore ways staff who teach and support learning can be sure their online materials are inclusive. Participant takeaways include a Design for Diversity poster as well as finding out how to use of MS Word Headings and Styles to generate a Table of Contents and simplify navigation. Making use of Word's in built features can transform student engagement with long documents. The session will also look at making small changes to text and images in order to enhance the student learning experience.
The main themes of the Education Strategy this event responds to are:
