Event description

In the long and often violent story of Christian-Jewish relations, the Reformation is regarded as a turning-point. It produced both the vicious anti-judaism of Luther's later writings, and the Christian Zionism of Calvinists, which would lead to the re-admission of the Jews to England under Oliver Cromwell. In this lecture, Kenneth Austin, whose monograph on The Reformation and the Jews will shortly be published by Yale University Press, will guide us through an essential period of history.

The BJL contains a number of early printed books which illustrate Christian-Jewish relations, including a pamphlet by Luther from 1523 (in his early, philosemitic, phase), and numerous works of Hebrew scholarship.
