Title: 'The Music and Music Theory of Paul Hindemith'

Following his appointment at the Berlin Musikhochschule in 1927, composer, conductor and performer Paul Hindemith began writing a textbook on music theory both as a tool for teaching composition and to help refine his own musical style. This was realised in print ten years later as the Unterweisung im Tonsatz, which was the first volume in a series of four planned treatises. This talk looks at the legacy of Hindemith’s Unterweisung, and questions whether he had set himself too big a task to succeed at a time when many areas of music theory and analysis were in their infancy. It then examines the historical coincidence of his move away from a position of great influence to the Yale music faculty at precisely the time when other theories of music, which are more familiar to musicology today, came to the fore.
This talk critically engages with the legacy of Hindemith's pioneering music and music theory, which coincides with the publication of my monograph, 'The Music and Music Theory of Paul Hindemith' by Boydell & Brewer, due in February 2018.

About the OpenCampus Programme
The OpenCampus Programme is the University of Hull's open access adult lifelong learning education programme. You can attend one session or all the sessions in a series. Sessions are informal and friendly and are not traditional public lectures. We do not charge for admission to sessions so we utilise the University's normal teaching spaces when they are not required for student teaching (lecture theatres and seminar rooms).
