Event description

Part of the OpenCampus 'Reflections on Gender and Sexuality' Tea-Time Talk Series for Pride in Hull week.

Political talk and discussion event.  First published in 1995, Nicola's book 'Over the Rainbow: Money Class and Homophobia' confronts the political contradictions in the LGBT+ movement and contains one of the earliest first-hand accounts of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, whose story was told in the hit film Pride.  Nicola was an original member of LGSM.

Written at a time when LGBT+ people enjoyed increased invisibility but faced continued discrimination and assault from conservative governments, the book shatters the myth of the unified LGBT+ 'community' and sets out an agenda for resistance firmly rooted in the politics of class.  Republished recently in an expanded edition, the 2016 version of Over the Rainbow contains fresh material on the impact of Pride and considers the challenges ahead for LGBT+ activism in the 21st century.

The annual Pride marches now attract hundreds of thousands from all over the UK and internationally.  It’s a brilliant testament to the achievements of the LGBT movement since the modern movement erupted into life at the Stonewall Riots in 1969.   However, the march in many major cities is now often very commercialised, failing to reflect the reality of life for most LGBT people in the age of austerity and crisis.   Many who attend feel frustrated at the lack of political impact, and others stay away, feeling it is no longer a proper protest march.   Nicola will discuss the contradictions in the current LGBT+ movement, read from her book and answer questions.  There will be plenty of time for discussion.  All welcome.
