Abstract
Hull played a key role in the history of first aid in the twentieth century. The city hosts Smith and Nephew, which developed and produced dressings including Elastoplast, and Reckitt Benckiser makes Dettol. Before the mid-1950s, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was not a common technique; the ‘Rocking Method’ was developed in Hull and became the official method used by the Royal Navy in the Second World War. The talk will also consider other key medical innovations in Hull, including using sugar lumps to administer the polio vaccine. This research is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
